Hitting it High
There are a few things in our set up and golf swing that will help us to hit the ball higher. Maybe you need to get the ball up quickly over a tree or perhaps over the lip of a bunker. This instruction is not intended for people who are topping the ball or hitting grounders. If this is your problem, you may want to visit our angle of attack article as you probably have some other issue in your golf swing.
To hit the ball higher, we can always take a more lofted club than we normally would. Obviously in doing this, we may not be able to hit the ball quite as far. Generally to hit the ball higher, we will move the ball slightly more forward in our stance. This will contribute to a more sweeping angle of attack, rather than a sharp descending blow, and less forward lean in the the shaft at impact.
During your swing, you can concentrate on keeping your weight a little more centered than normal, rather than shifting excessively to your left side. Finish with your hands high which will contribute to launching the ball higher and fully releasing the club face.
In summary, if we want to hit the ball higher, we can always choose a club with more loft. In our set up, we should move the ball slightly more forward than normal, suggesting a shallow, more sweeping angle of attack. Focus on keeping your body weight more centered through impact finishing with your hands in a higher position than normal. With a little practice, this should help you launch the ball higher.
